What is a cantilevered staircase?

A true cantilevered staircase is a design where each tread is fixed only at one end. The supporting structure is hidden within each tread and behind the face of the wall. There are no supports between the treads.

How thick does the glass have to be?

This is dependent on whether the glass will be used in a structural manner or for decorative purposes. It can vary in size from 8mm toughened for slotted pieces up to 25mm toughened and laminated for structural balustrades and glass walls and even 34mm toughened and triple laminated for glass treads, glass landings and glass floors.
